NRI means “overseas Indians” majorly known as – “Non-Resident Indian”. The term NRI refers to a person who is a citizen of Indian origin but has migrated to another country (lives abroad) for employment, business, or vocation and/or for any other purpose showing his intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period.

When you are considered an NRI in India?

The term NRI is used for a person who lives in India for less than six months (182 days) in a year. This year is generally termed as a proceeding financial year (1 April to 31 March) for example – the Indian financial year for 2022 will run from 1 April – 2022 to 31 March 2023.

NRIs are the citizens of India, but due to some specific kind of reasons, they go to live in foreign countries (abroad). This word is also used for a person/child whose both parents are Indian or one of the parents is a citizen of India but he born in a country outside India.

Mostly it has been seen that this often includes people who are Indian but they have taken citizenship of other countries.
